Some I dig up, some I find on the surface. I do mostly surface hunting. In this case it was surface hunting through a dense high desert forest where the trees aren't all that tall, but they're close together in a crease between mountains.
That's about 100 lbs of rocks. I carried the large one by itself, and the others all together in my backpack, plus I carry my rock hammer and a liter of water. Closest place where I could park my truck was about 3/4th mile away from where I found them. Oh, and elk surprised me in the woods.
I love it. But you've got to like hiking also to be a rock hound. Fortunately I love both. It's like finding treasure kind of, except most of the time it's not worth much, hah! I put the rocks all around my gardens. And collect them mostly for their beauty. You can't tell in the video very much, but they do sparkle like crazy in the sunlight.
100 pounds = almost 45 kilograms. I found these on national forest land in a dry desert mountain stream bed they call an arroyo here in northern New Mexico, about a mile from the Harding Mine.
Rock hound rule #1 - rocks rarely fall uphill. So, if you know good rocks are being mined somewhere, then see if there is a streambed downhill and look there for some neat rocks!
